Q – How Can We Make Up a Team?
A – Simply get 5 adults together who’d like to do it! It could be family, friends, workmates, from a pub, hobby club … whatever! 5’s the ideal, but it’s flexible – with a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6. Children can be included in these numbers, or counted as extra, so long as there are still 3 adults.
Q – Why Does this Involve a Wheelchair?
A – We’re raising awareness for invisible disability and accessibility as well as mitochondrial disease and its impact. We’d like everyone to take a turn at pushing and being pushed to see what it’s like. This will also highlight occasional wheelchair use, i.e. not everyone who uses a wheelchair needs it all the time.
Q – What if I’m a Wheelchair User Myself?
A – Wheelchair users can of course take part and either provide the only, or second wheelchair within the team.
Q – How Do We Get Hold of a Wheelchair?
A – You can borrow, hire or buy one. Organisations such as the British Red Cross hire them out or they can be found on such as eBay or Facebook Marketplace. Some charity shops sell them too.
Q – Is it a Race?
A – No. This wouldn’t be allowed on a public highway without special permissions, road closures etc. So it’s simply about completing the challenge as a team and getting a taste of what wheelchair users and carers experience. However if you want to time yourselves – feel free!
Q – What’s the Route?
A – Start and end at KT Hydraulics, Gannex Mills, Gannex Park, Dewsbury Road, Elland, HX5 9AF. Everyone will be made aware of the route before the event but it will involve going up a hill (Lower Edge)! We will be slightly staggering the start to avoid too much disruption to the public highway. Refreshments will be provided for all teams at the finish.
Q – How Do We Collect Sponsorship?
A – Online: Set up your team fundraising page. It’s easy! Full details will be provided after registration. Offline: We provide sponsor forms after registration and a link for downloading them yourself.
To help you explain our cause we can also provide as many of our leaflets as you need. There is no minimum sponsorship to collect …. We will welcome contributions large and small.
Q – Will We Be Collecting Along the Way Too?
A – Yes – cans/buckets will be provided. Teams can collect both along the route and in some of the pubs along the route too. Full details after registration.
Q – Can I Choose Which Mission to Support?
A – Yes! Or you can just support the charity as a whole if you’ve no connection to a particular mission. To help you choose, please see our missions.
Q – Do We Have to Be in Fancy Dress?
A – That’s the ideal, as it attracts much more attention! Alternatively, you could wear our charity t-shirts and/or hoodies (available to order @£15 or £18) or branded workwear if you’re a company team.
Q – Is There a Fee to Take Part?
A – No, no fee at all.
Q – Will I Receive Anything for Taking Part?
A – Each team member gets a souvenir certificate on completion. Plus there are fun team prizes for most sponsorship, most collected on the day, best dressed team, best dressed wheelchair, best social media post and the best team selfie!
