Light Up For Mito (LUFM) is the biggest global awareness event for mitochondrial disease, taking place on the Saturday of World Mito Week, which is marked in the third week of September each year.
World Mitochondrial Disease Week raises awareness of mitochondrial disease among doctors and the general public, and aims to improve the lives of people affected by mito. It is an initiative of International Mito Patients (IMP) which unites mito patient organisations around the world to lead a global mito movement.
Each September, many monuments, landmarks and buildings light up green to raise awareness, and My Mito Mission take part in the campaign each year by encouraging buildings across the UK to join in!
We’re so grateful to all the monuments that have joined us over the years, including Leeds First Direct Arena, Edinburgh Castle, Enniskillen Castle, Port of Liverpool Building, Wainhouse Tower, Alexandra Palace, Excel London and OVO Hydro as well as so many more.
Last year, we also launched our Glow Walks! The idea came from one of our missions, Brody’s Mito Mission, for people across the country to don their ‘glowiest’ outfits and accessories, including our brilliant LUFM glow sticks, and complete an awareness-raising walk in their local areas!
We had a brilliant time on our own walk from My Mito Mission HQ at K T Hydraulics, to Wainhouse Tower which was lit up green.
We have a wide range of Light Up For Mito merchandise available to support any awareness-raising you’d like to do.
World Mitochondrial Disease Week will be 15th-21st September this year, meaning Light Up For Mito will take place on Saturday 20th September!
There’s so many ways to get involved – from coming along to a Glow Walk, to contacting buildings that could light up green, or even organising your own Glow Walk or another awareness-raising challenge/event!
Get in touch if you’d like to find out more.
